Highlights from our 2007 Winter Banquet

The first OpenAir Conditioner was held at the Paper Valley Hotel in Appleton, January 12-14, 2007. We had a great group of people who braved the unpredictable Wisconsin weather to join us for the weekend.

The weekend fun began as a small group of topless friends gathered in the hotel lobby. As the temperatures dipped outside, the warm welcomes grew. What began as a small cricle of chairs quickly grew, consuming every available chair in the lobby.

As the conversation turned from the summer fun towards evening dining, it became apparent that this group was looking for fun together. Dinner reservations at Lombardi's Steakhouse quickly grew from 2 couples, to a group of 8, to a group of 16, to a group of 20 in a matter of minutes.

Saturday began with adventure. Appleton is a shoppers paradise and it sounded like many took advantage of the local fun. But of course, the highlight of the weekend was the Official OpenAir banquet.

After dinner, Matt Joseph dazzled us with his knowledge of the automotive industry with an in-depth discussion of alternaive fuel technologies and some of the hurdles we still need to overcome before our dependence on oil is through. With all the technology advances taking place, the underlying goal we all need to keep working towards is good old fashioned conservation.

At the beginning of the evening everyone was given an envelope with instructions not to open it. In one of the envelopes was the announcement for the 2007 OpenAir Classic. Longtime member Fritz Gierach was the lucky attendee who got to announce this year's destination.

Also in the audience were special guests from the Convention and Visitors Burea of the host city, who gave a presentation and welcomed us on behalf of the city.

One of the toys Matt brought along for all to see was the new Volkswagon EOS convertible.
With a trunk full of press kits for everyone, Matt took us through the transformation from a beautiful hardtop, to a snappy convertible at the push of a button. It truly is an amazing sight to see this car go through its elegent contortions to let the sun shine in.

And for some, the big excitement of the weekend
was testing the recoil capabilities of hotel beds!
