Bill & Jayne Saybolt

I first saw our '72 Olds Cutlass in 1978 when Bill drove it in the driveway. I assumed it cost $24.99 because just the week before we had a "discussion" about not spending more than $25 without first talking it over together (I had just spent $50 on school clothes for the kids). We had two cars and a one-car garage and no place to put this third car (I did have a suggestion for him!). That was the beginning of our love affair with the Cutlass.

We’ve enjoyed (and cussed at) the Cutlass over the years, but never got as much enjoyment as when we were on the WCC – and now OAC – tours. We managed to get through the overheated engine while waiting in line for 200 cars to move out of a parking lot; to still make the trip when we blew a headgasket on a Thursday morning when leaving for the Tour weekend; and to be fortunate to have another convertible driver nearby to jump our dead battery when we left the lights on during the day. These are only little inconveniences when compared to the joy of riding with the top down on a beautiful, warm sunny day.

We look forward to the third weekend in August each year and are so very glad that the tradition is continuing with Open Air Classic. We’ve enjoyed all the “topless people” and the wonderful places we’ve been able to visit, both in – and out – of Wisconsin and hope we will always be included in the “first 200”.
